The mystery of the Reverb Brass Keys

dsc_0675

I’m setting up to start taking the play out of some of my RockShox Reverb dropper seatposts. Between break in and wear, a certain amount of play is created in the post. This leads to a saddle that has a bit of a shake to it. My goal is to have just enough room in the grooves so that the posts are able to move freely up and down with the post binder tightened but no more than that so to minimize rotational play in the saddle.

I ordered up what was available for brass keys. To my suprise, the sizes aren’t in an order corresponding to diameter. Rather, just names for sizes.

It would be nice to know what happened to Key Size #1 and #2 in the offerings. They aren’t listed and aren’t available. My guess is that they were pre-production sizes that aren’t in the usable range any longer.

I took measures of the keys I had on hand after calibrating my micrometer to a 0.1060″(minus,ZZ) pin that I had in my shop set. I tried to keep things at a constant temperature. The measures are recorded below.
